“In Small Packages (part 3)” Luke 2:8-20
Sometimes big things come in small packages! As we approach the Christmas season, we can see that this is God’s mode of operating in the Christmas story. The bottom rung of the 1st century economic ladder was the shepherd, and yet it is to shepherds that the announcement of God’s good news comes. It is easy to think that those who have more stuff/status are the more fortunate, but in this story, it is those who hear from God, respond to God and bear witness to God’s gift!

Sometimes big things come in small packages! As we approach the Christmas season, we can see that this is God’s mode of operating in the Christmas story. Past disappointments as well as fears of the future can leave us on edge and in a state of spiritual turmoil. Yet, God didn’t choose to use those immune from fear, but rather an unexpected couple, Zechariah and Elizabeth to prepare the world for the Prince of Peace.

“In Small Packages”
Luke 1:26-38
Sometimes big things come in small packages! As we approach the Christmas season, we can see that this is God’s mode of operating in the Christmas story. It is easy in this chaotic and threatening world to despair, certainly the young woman in today’s story could have fallen victim to it. But the Hope of the World was coming, though not in the way that anyone would expect.

“Don’t get stuck in Meribah” Psalm 95
Many of the Psalms give us a pattern and a voice to express our Thanks to God. There is a reason for this beyond the fact that we all appreciate being appreciated. Developing a thankful heart is a powerful weapon to restore and secure the joy of living in the midst of trying circumstances.

“Perspective”
Psalm 147
As Thanksgiving approaches and the election season begins to fade into the background, our nation finds itself stuck in division. Depending on one’s point of view, we celebrate the power of majority rule, or we grieve the suppression of certain values by the vote. The Psalms offer insight navigating through times like this, regardless of one’s political persuasion. There is perspective in praise, there is power in thanksgiving and we are invited to find our peace in Him.

“A Meal to Remember”
Luke 22:7-20
Habits, routines, patterns, we all have them. Some are good, some are bad, many lend a sense of comfort or security to our lives.
Sometimes, however, even good habits can lose their meaning and the pattern itself can get in the way of the reason behind it. When Jesus said, “do this in remembrance”, what was his point for us? How can the moments of communion become life giving again?

“Making it Count!”
Micah 6:8
With Election Day (Nov. 8th) just a week away, there is talk of a new malady afflicting many Americans called “ESD”. Yes, Election Stress Disorder is real and is quite troubling. With so much riding on the outcome of an election, it is easy to get overloaded and miss what we are called to do. I don’t simply mean casting a ballot, but in a more subversive way to really change the world. What, you might ask, are you called to do? I’m glad you asked...

“It’s Silly out There”
Matthew 22:19-21
With Election Day (Nov. 8th) just around the corner it’s important to know how to respond to all the noise leading up to the vote. Fearful of what will happen if ___________ is elected or if that proposition passes/fails, there is a lot riding on this election. Name calling, character defaming, side taking make up much of the media (and social media) environment in which we live. Checking out is an option, but is it what we as citizens are called to? When it comes to things political, the Bible is not silent. Perhaps it can breathe a little sanity back into this crazy time.

“Imperfect Living”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Our faults and failings
To Err is human, and to be irritated by the “errs” of others is also human. Humanity, we are a faulty bunch. We are certainly in need of God’s grace, but in reality often feel our imperfections block us from it. How might we better access that Grace which is sufficient for us and better live amidst our imperfections?
